Finally he is showing them, his exhibition at E spacio Gallery representing a career first – the only surprise being how long it has taken as he has a distinctly interesting and original vision. Not abstract, as he expected he would be, like that other great blacksmith sculptor, David Smith, but a figuration inspired by Giacometti, Modigliani and the sculptors of antiquity, Egyptian in particular, hence the title of this show 'Communing with the Ancients'. Lumley himself talks very well about how he 'listens' to each piece of metal he works with, about how he allows it to emerge and morph under the hammer's blows, the outcome never predictable.
