Far from it, for gilding suits this New Zealand born artist's particular vision very well; used to the intense glaring light of the Pacific landscapes she grew up in, the burnished, reflected surfaces she achieves with it work equally well in fact with the wilderness coastlines of Southern and Eastern England that are her preferred subject matter. Her spare, luminous paintings of mist-filled riverscapes at dusk, for example, with poles or tree stumps emerging out of the moonlit scene, feel both mysteriously opaque and translucent. Showing at M odern Artists Gallery this month. NU THUMB nail Alice Cescatti ‘Underwater Bloom’
