Thus, even before he came to Europe, he had worked for several years as an agronomist in the Guyanian rainforest amongthe Warao people, a period he regarded as formative, and when he “started to understand what art really is.” His arrival in London coincided with the great exhibitions of American Abstract Expressionist art, with Jackson Pollock and Arshile Gorky making a particular impression, helping him forge a truly independent and powerful artistic voice Showingat O ctober Gallery this month.
