GALLERIES SEPTEMBER 2017

Avril Nicol's venture

&Gallery

in

Edinburgh breaks the mold with

exhibitions of work by artists based

outside Scotland. The latest – of

four younger abstract painters –

is a good example, with three of

them, Hanna ten Doornkaat,

Ele Pack and Elfyn Lewis, based

in London, Brighton and Cardiff

respectively, with only London-

born Jai Llewellyn working in

Edinburgh. What richly varied

takes on abstraction they are too –

from Llewllyn’s rich, almost

luscious, mark making suggestive

of growth and decay, construction

and destruction, and ten

Doornkaat’s layering of textural

geometries imbued with

sensations of memory, to Pack’s

organic and rhythmic overlays of

paint, collage, pencil and metallics

with its glimpses of hidden

spaces, and Lewis’ richly

impasted surfaces bursting into

vivid landscape form.
