GALLERY NINE
9B Margarets Buildings, Bath
BA1 2LP
www.gallerynine.co.ukMAP 12 ENGLAND
BATH
Born in 1947 in Blackburn, Mike
Holcroft trained with that hotbed of
progressive young painters who
moved through Walthamstow
College of Art en route to the
Royal College in the early 1970s.
An exhibiting career in the UK and
Europe followed before he and his
wife Rosemary returned to
Lancashire and, a few years back,
set up the
Water Street Gallery
,
in Todmorden, a small, former mill
town in the heart of the Pennines.
It is this intensely dramatic
landscape which would now
seem, increasingly, to lie at the
heart of the way his art has
developed over the last few years,
in particular his large scale
graphite and oil pastel drawings
where, working in both
observational and imaginative
modes, he creates images that
are not only powerfully
expressive but also emotionally
truthful in effect.
