A day spent in a darkened room

off Southwark Bridge Road

recently looking at images of

nearly 2000 prints confirmed for

me (and I think, all my fellow

selectors) that the current state of

contemporary British printmaking

is remarkably encouraging. We

were there for the

Bankside

Gallery

based Royal Society of

Painter Printmakers’ annual open

submission, the National Original

Print Exhibition, and what we

found ourselves looking at was a

wonderfully broad ranging take

on what a ‘print’ in the

contemporary art world might

consist in –all the usual suspects

plus 3D, relief, books,

photographically derived

techniques, you name it, they

were all there –combining with a

vivid and youthful dynamism and

liveliness of ideas. A medium, in

short, very much of the modern

moment.
