Painters and gardening have

always had a natural affinity –

Monet is an obvious example –

Cedric Morris and John Nash, Ian

Hamilton Finlay and Derek Jarman

are others. Louis Turpin is

another, though it came to him

only comparatively late in the day

with a visit to Sissinghurst in 1985

aged 38. Interiors went out of the

window, literally, as he saw in

such gardens the idea of ‘rooms’,

wonderfully composed, richly

coloured rooms, and he started

painting them instead, with his

own allotment in deepest East

Sussex keeping him straight.

Thus, while he has painted many

of the great gardens over the

years – Christopher Lloyd’s Great

Dixter and Piet Oudolf’s at

Scampston among them – back

gardens and allotments are there

also – colour and structure as vital

to his work as theirs. Kindred

spirits. At
